CASTLE ROCK -- The brass buttons faded with time, but the memories are fresher than ever.
John James was pulled from his law studies at Iowa's Drake University more than 90 years ago and made into a military man - an engineer in the 8th Army. Before leaving for Europe, he got the basics: a drab green coat, two pairs of pants, leggings and a side bag for personal belongings.
He fought in the trenches, became a sergeant, inhaled mustard gas and returned to Iowa in 1919 to practice law. He died in 1962. The gassing more than four decades earlier finally caught up with him.
