Tim Wightman, who runs an organic dairy farm near Hayward, Wis., knew it was illegal to sell unpasteurized milk to consumers in his state. So he came up with an alternative: selling shares of his 36 cows.
The plan, called Milk Direct, allowed shareholders to get all the raw milk they wanted - for a "boarding" fee that worked out to $2.50 a gallon.
Now his cow-sharing plan, which initially had the blessing of state officials, has been criticized by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
