Virginia City commands attention because of its amazingly close resemblance to the town of the 1860s. Politics, mining, and social activities important to the history of the community continue to be the mainstays of the economy. Small-scale gold mining continues in Alder Gulch, and some residents work at the Cypress Hills Talc Mines near Ennis, about ten miles away. Although about 150 people live here permanently, the population increases dramatically during the summer. Many who own homes spend only summers or holidays in the community, along with transient summer citizens who come to provide a workforce for the seasonal restaurants, hotels, shops, and theater.
