According to the official statistics made by the State Statistical Bureau, the capacity of polystyrene (PS) in China was 1.2 million t/a in 2001.
China has 15 major PS producers today. The biggest producer is Zhenjiang Chimei. It has a capacity of 300 000 t/a and owns 8 production lines. BASF holds the second place in PS production in the world, only next to Dow Chemical. Yangzi-BASF Ethylene Co. is also the second biggest PS producer in China. It has a capacity of 180 000 t/a including 60 000 t/a general-purpose varieties, 80 000 t/a impact-resistant varieties and 40 000 t/a expandable varieties.
