Demographics play Michigan sales role
LANSING, Mich. -- Certain footwear retailers in the Detroit area -- the gritty eastern side of the state -- are attributing a shift in sales from dress shoes, namely exotics, to athletics on a struggling auto industry and rising drug trade.
And about 150 miles away in the Grand Rapids region -- a scenic region located on the western side of the state -- retailers are experiencing a healthy business in a fast-growing area driven by tourism and the furniture industry.
Divided east and west, Michigan's disparate economy came up at the Michigan Shoe Travelers show here last week and was discussed by other retailers ...
