In the good old days back in the 1950s, there were 'Keep Off The Grass' signs and a cycling ban in Cannon Hill Park. Today the formality of the past has gone and the neatly manicured lawns by the celebrated formal flower beds are no longer forbidden territory and a cycle path runs through the park.
'All the ornamental areas used to have fencing when I arrived in the later 1950s,' remembers park manager John Greenhouse, who has worked at Birmingham's premier park for more than 40 years.
