Mersey Oil Spill Impact Negligible in Long- Report Asserts
LONDON - Last year's spill of about 150 tons of Venezuelan crude into the River Mersey in Northern England has caused no long-term damage to the estuary, according to a study of the mishap.
The spill, from a 12-mile pipeline conecting Shell's storage terminal at Tranmere with its refinery at Stanlow, occurred in August 1989. Shell has since been fined more than $1.5 million for polluting the river.
