In 1974, when Ohioans Janet and Rolfe Hagan hopped in their van and headed west, they weren't sure what, exactly, they were looking for. No matter: In Oregon's Coast Range Mountains, they found it. The region's temperate climate (Zone 8) and spectacular scenery allowed the couple to indulge their love of nature, fine food, and gardening. The restaurant they opened became known for its use of fresh herbs, which patrons could examine up close in beds arrayed around the property. Then, in 1989, they decided on a fresh focus: They closed the restaurant, purchased an abandoned farm in Alsea (about two hours southwest of Portland), and opened the Thyme Garden.
