Stonyfield Farm Inc. was founded in 1983 in the town of Wilton, N.H., as a project to help revitalize the struggling New England dairy industry and support family farms. Samuel Kaymen, one of the country's early authorities on organic and biodynamic agriculture, teamed up with Gary Hirshberg, an environmental activist, windmill builder and nonprofit leader. Together, Kaymen, founder and chairman, and Hirshberg, president and chief executive officer, set out to teach people that food did indeed come from the earth. They also discovered one way to fund their educational efforts -- by selling yogurt.
