In the British colony of Hong Kong, where 98 per cent of the population is Chinese, cosmetics (including makeup, facial and body skincare) are more important to the local Chinese than fragrances, according to a research study conducted by the French Trade Commission.
The Chinese do not generally use perfume on a regular basis but rather on special occasions, and prefer light and flowery fragrances. Perfume is more often offered as a gift which explains why the local Chinese are very brand conscious.
Overall, it is estimated that local consumption represents about 25 per cent of perfume imports (after deducting re-exports). The rest is bought by ...
