NORTH HILLS - A cold winter fog lifted from the Statue of Liberty nearly five decades ago to greet Hans W. Eberhard, a teen refugee of war-torn Germany.
``It was just a shambles, there was nothing left. We were like cockroaches in or own homeland,'' he recalled. ``We slept in a pigsty, literally.''
