OK, so it's common sense by now that you don't keep your dog locked up in your car on a hot day.

But what about the garage, where at least it's out of the sunlight?

"Keep your dog in a place where there is shade and air circulation," said Peter Ammon, a veterinarian at Animal House in St. Charles. "I'd suggest under a tree. That's a lot better than a garage."

Garages can get beastly hot, because there isn't much air circulation.

It's best to keep a dog indoors if possible, with access to the cooler basement, if you have one.
