Work began Monday to dismantle three inactive Cold War-era missile silos in Vernon Hills.
Constructed nearly a half-century ago, the former Nike missile site was one of more than a dozen that ringed the Chicago area as protection against attacks on the Midwest industrial center.
In its new life, the site will be a $25 million recreation complex with dozens of soccer and ball fields and other attractions, including Vernon Hills High School's first football stadium, scheduled to open this fall.
