IAQ: Legal trouble for the 90s
-- "Indoor Air Quality will be the toxic tort of the 90s," says Thomas F. Gardner, an attorney-engineer with a New Orleans law firm.
Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) is a term that "begs for definition," according to Gardner. He says that in a legal sense, a building is "sick" if:
1. More than 20% of the occupants complain.
2. Occupants show soft-tissue ailment symptoms (congestion, respiratory problems, etc.)
3. Symptoms last more than two weeks.
4. Symptoms "magically disappear after leaving work."
