The $21 million Nixon Library in Yorba Linda, California, which opened July 20, takes visitors on a twisted trip down memory lane. From Helen Gahagan Douglas to E. Howard Hunt, the effort made here to reshape popular memory is more sweeping more relentless, more sophiscated and more expensive than that undertaken by any any other President.
The July 19 dedication was a cheerful occasion. While an audience of 50,000 sweltered under the desert sun and CNN broadcast the proceedings live, former Treasury Secretary William Simon spoke of Nixon's "lifelong commitment to peace and freedom"; Ronald Reagan said "the world is a better place - a safer place - because of ...
