FORTUNE announced today that Wal-Mart, the Arkansas-based retailer, tops the list of the FORTUNE Global 500, rising from the No. 2 spot last year and becoming the first service company to be No. 1 on the list.
Rounding out the top ten are Exxon Mobil (U.S) at No. 2; General Motors (U.S.) at No. 3; BP (Britain) at No. 4; Ford Motor (U.S.) at No. 5; Enron (U.S.) at No. 6; DaimlerChrysler (Germany) at No. 7; Royal Dutch/Shell Group (Netherlands/Britain) at No. 8; General Electric (U.S.) at No. 9; and Toyota Motor (Japan) at No. 10.
