The state of Louisiana has detected traces of the banned antibiotic chloramphenicol in a sample of Chinese crawfish purchased at a Louisiana grocery store. The sample, tested in late April at Louisiana State University's Agriculture Center, contained around 2 parts per billion of chloramphenicol.
Initially, the Food and Drug Administration, which has been testing samples of imported and domestic farmed fish and shellfish since early this year, said it would not halt sales of Chinese crawfish unless the sample from Louisiana was analyzed at an FDA facility and found to contain at least 5 ppb of chloramphenicol.
