Kmart and Wal-Mart: execs make the chains tick. (Commentary).

Perhaps the two most interesting retailers in America these days are Kmart and Wal-Mart, the former for its dramatic new directions and aggressive new positioning, the latter for its unprecedented success and its dedication to both customer and employee.

Understandably, Kmart chief executive Bernard Fauber and Wal-Mart founder and chief executive officer Sam Walton have received much of the credit for their chains' success. But as both men will tell you--and sincerely believe--it's the people who report to them that really make their chains work.
