LAS VEGAS--Las Vegas remains a safe bet for expanding retailers. This desert city remains the fastest-growth metropolitan area in the nation, and while its economy was shaken by the decline in travel and tourism that followed the September 11 terrorist attacks, a recovery quickly followed.

Las Vegas saw a 2.3% decline in visitors, to 35 million, in 2001. That was the first drop since 1982, according to the Las Vegas Convention Visitors Authority. In September 2001 the number of visitors fell 14.1% from the preceding month.
