January imports kick off '90 with record levels. (textile and apparel imports)

JANUARY IMPORTS KICK OFF '90 WITH RECORD LEVELS

WASHINGTON (FNS) -- Imports of textiles and apparel rose 9.6 percent in January, the Commerce Department reported Tuesday.

The total volume of shipments -- 1,184,700,000 square meters equivalent, compared with 1,080,500,000 SME in January 1989 -- is the highest ever, but only 0.6 percent higher than shipments in August 1989, the previous record month, a Commerce spokesman said.

Overall shipments for the 12 months ending in January also increased, by 12.1 percent, to 12,168,100,000 SME from 10,854,800,000 SME.

Apparel imports rose 13.7 percent in January to 599.1 million SME from 526.9 million SME a year earlier. ...
