Southeast Michigan's tool industry has organized to battle competition from Canadian companies that can quote jobs for 30 percent less.
Canada's weaker currency poses even more of a threat to U.S. tooling companies during the ailing economy because there are fewer jobs to divvy up.
``Every time we quote a job, we ask who we missed out to. They say `Canadians, Canadians, Canadians,' '' said Rick Scullion, president of S&P Steel Fabricating Inc. ``All the major ... buyers have started buying from the Canadians because they can save so much money.''
