IN THE PAST THIRTY YEARS, Jewish Studies has experienced remarkable growth in universities across the United States. While the study of Judaism has been part of the university curriculum practically since its inception, the recognition of Jewish Studies as a formal discipline dates back to the 1960's. It was in that era that the civil rights movement and the flowering of ethnic pride in America began to have an impact on the university--most notably, with the establishment of programs in African-American Studies.
