If ever there was a year to overhaul the state's badly broken property tax system, this is it. There's money in the bank to help do it without inflicting excessive pain; the outcry over local property tax increases has never been louder, and the problem will only get worse.
That's why it's disturbing to hear signals from St. Paul that only small tax fixes are likely this session. It's way too early to give up on a comprehensive property tax fix. But it's not too early to begin building the bipartisan coalition that would be essential to sell reform to the state's taxpayers.
