Minnesotans believe in work, almost as firmly as they believe that winter will come again. Work has virtue as well as value, Minnesotans say. They've told pollsters through the years that every capable adult has a duty to work - and every full-time job should pay a livable wage.
Gov. Arne Carlson's persistent opposition to a state minimum-wage increase flies in the face of those Minnesota bedrock opinions. A solid bipartisan majority of the Legislature has once again given the Republican governor an opportunity to realign his thinking with public opinion. He should do so, and let a higher state minimum wage become law.
