News reports Sunday were more than a bit breathless in describing U.S. use of nerve gas in Vietnam. The reports gave an impression that U.S. military leaders had designed an operation specifically targeting nerve gas at American defectors. The actual story, as reported by CNN-Time magazine, is less dramatic. The government now needs to investigate fully. But if the CNN-Time report turns out to be fully accurate, what occurred was one sorry excess in a war full of much larger ones.
