FACING History: The Black Image in American Art 1710-1940 (Bedford Arts/The Corcoran Gallery of Art, $50) is an examination of the depiction of Blacks in American visual arts from the early part of the 18th century through the dawning of World War II. It presents 172 illustrations that help chronicle the evolving social and cultural attitudes towards Blacks. The works range from degrading caricatures to nobel and dignified portraits.
