When musician Kathy Peck and her rock group, The Contractions, opened for Duran Duran at the Oakland Coliseum in 1984, they'd hit the big time. But after four years of practice sessions and performances, the musician didn't know that the price she would pay for success would be a permanent 40 percent hearing loss brought on by the accumulated exposure to the power and volume of the music she loved.
