Eroding community
John Brandl is misguided when he claims that school vouchers will promote both competition and community. In fact, market-based competition will erode meaningful community.
A discussion of vouchers and community must focus on neighborhoods, where we actually live. I may share a "tolerant" and "nourishing community" with political scientists across the nation, but I go next door when I need to borrow a snow blower.
Considerable evidence suggests that childhood well-being, economic opportunity, crime prevention and many other desirable benefits result when neighborhoods are strong.
