Freedom equals responsibility
Your headline about the New Country School in LeSueur, Minn., ("Free speech is issue in school expulsion," July 13) is misleading. The issue is not freedom of speech at all. If your report is complete, this is about common civility. Nowhere does it indicate that the Fister family gave the slightest respect to a simple request. If we cannot be civil to one another and teach civility in our schools, freedom of speech will lead us to the courts, or worse.
The Minnesota Civil Liberties Union is being used in this case. There are no freedoms without attendant responsibilities. Good schools instill this in our citizens. It seems ...
