A recent report issued by the Los Angeles Regional Technology Alliance (LARTA), noted that Los Angeles is lagging behind both the San Francisco Bay area and San Diego in the development of a vibrant biomedical industry. Several reasons were cited for this including the lack of venture capital, the "brain drain", which makes it difficult for local companies to access trained personnel and the dispersion of existing biomedical companies throughout the region.
