Mario Mendoza was a journeyman major league infielder in the 1970s and 1980s. Truly a marginal performer in a league of greats, Mendoza could snare hard-hit grounders with the best of them. But when it came his turn to grab a bat and swing at major league pitching, he whiffed more than most. So often, in fact, that his batting average hovered in the truly mediocre .200 range, rarely higher, rarely lower (with four homers in nine seasons). Therein lies the futility, the greatness and immortality of Mario Mendoza: His failed efforts at hitting labeled the .200 mark the Mendoza Line, in honor of our friend Mario.
