EDI Getting the Act Together
DETROIT (FNS) -- Trading partners often treat electronic data interchange as a technological handshake, a gentlemen's agreement to send a shipment or pay an invoice.
Lawyers, government agencies and other groups are taking a more careful look.
For example, the American Bar Association will soon publish a model trading partner agreement while the legal community is examining the possible need to amend the Uniform Commercial Code. Such a revision would cover the basic rules governing purchase and sale of goods, and the statute of frauds provision requiring "written and signed" evidence for sales of more than $500.
