The basics of electronic data interchange
Electronic data interchange (EDI) is the intercompany electronic transmission of business documents in a standard format. In order for the exchange to be truly EDI, the process must extend from business system to business system with no manual intervention.
Businesses that participate in an EDI exchange are referred to as trading partners. A single exchange of a business transaction between two trading partners is made up of five components:
* Creation of the transaction by the sending application.
* Translation of the transaction into a coded format.
