THE USE OF rapid solidification techniques to form beryllium alloys might mean a resurgence of popularity for the metal.
Researchers at Los Alamos (NM) National Laboratory are developing these techniques with the aim of producing beryllium alloys for use on the U.S. government's National Aerospace Plane (NASP).
The benefits of beryllium include its high strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios. Beryllium currently is used in advanced optics systems and in mechanical parts for civilian and military applications.
