The FBI and a federal grand jury are investigating members of a closed Central District mosque for possible ties to al-Qaida terrorists, federal officials and a Seattle defense attorney confirm.
Officials say they are most concerned about ties between a handful of Seattle-area Muslims - most of whom are American-born - and Abu Hamza al-Masri, a fundamentalist sheik based in England who is believed to be tied to the al-Qaida terror network. At least one of the Seattle men has met al-Masri in England.
