Santa Fe's Engineering Department doesn't take up a lot of space in Santa Fe Center, the railway's headquarters in downtown Chicago. There's Herb Webb, assistant vice president and chief engineer, and Jim Miller, assistant chief engineer-administration, and an administrative assistant, Natalie Show. Engineering functions and people are now at Topeka, Kan., and maintenance functions and people are at Albuquerque, N.M., as a result of a 1989 restructuring that turned out to be an excellent move.
But while the "rent" at Santa Fe Center may be low, the engineering-maintenance operation is getting a bigger piece of Santa Fe's capital improvement budget. In 1989, ...
