IN THE MORNING of March 12, a day that could prove to be a turning point in Haiti's troubled history-my wife and I were waiting in our apartment at the Hotel Montana for dinner guests we firmly believed would find it impossible to come. Before the four-day crisis that shook Haiti with bloodshed, strikes, arson, and looting, our friend Douglas Watson, the deputy chief of mission at the American Embassy, had phoned to say that Ambassador Alvin Adams would like to meet us. Could the Watsons bring the Adamses by next Monday for a drink? We said, Of course, we'd be honored, and perhaps they would stay for dinner.
