Axilda M. Chadwick, 98, a Central New York champion of women in distress and the elderly, died Thursday at The Nottingham in DeWitt.
During, and especially after, her career as a teacher and librarian, Chadwick volunteered with a variety of governmental and nonprofit efforts to improve the lives of abused women and the frail elderly.
She played a leadership role in the founding of Vera House, a shelter for abused women. Chadwick Residence, a second-stage residence for women in distress and their children, was named after her because of her intense involvement in the cause.
