The state of afterschool programs and changes in the 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) Program as a result of the "No Child Left Behind" Act were the focus of a recent NLC-sponsored roundtable. Two dozen national experts and city lobbyists assembled in Washington, D.C., for the event.
City lobbyists were informed that as many as 15 million children in the United States leave school each afternoon without a safe place to go. Afterschool programs offer young people safe, enriching, fun and engaging places to go once the school day ends.
