In Miami, Florida, a woman wrote personal checks to pay her bills, then dropped them into a mailbox. Criminals stole her bills from the mailbox, and, within hours, a gang of identity thieves dipped her checks into chemicals and rewrote the checks to themselves for up to $450 each.(1)
Such stories are common to law enforcement authorities, who, almost daily, receive calls and complaints pertaining to identity theft across the country. Recently, the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) adopted a resolution to help curb identity theft.
