SAN FRANCISCO _ The idea, in theory, was excellent.
This week, a United States Olympic Committee delegation has been in town, trying to choose a potential host for the 2012 Games. As a climax to the visit Monday afternoon, the visitors were whizzed up an elevator to a 51st-floor room of a downtown San Francisco skyscraper. Outside the window, there was supposed to be a spectacular view of the Golden Gate bridge.
Ooops. Fog.
"We thought we could see the bridge today," said Anne Cribbs, the Bay Area bid's leader. "We can imagine it, though."
