Pharmacy posts biggest gains
CDR Roundup--With the category registering a better than 19% sales gain overall, prescription drugs were once again the big movers in the nation's chain drug stores last year.
For the record, sales behind the pharmacy counters increased at a 19.3% clip, nearly matching the 19.4% improvement they generated in 1988. In the process, sales of prescription drugs surpassed the $10 billion mark, closing the year at almost $10.4 billion, the highest total in the annals of chain drug retailing.
All told, prescription drugs accounted for 24.2% of total sales in chain drug stores a year ago, up substantially from 1988.
