ATLANTA -- Heat and Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus prompted Georgia Department of Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin to ask Governor Roy Barnes to start Damage Assessment Reports for the state's tobacco crop.

"I've had reports of 65 to 75 percent loss, primarily from the Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus, on some of our tobacco farms," Commissioner Irvin said. "We need to get an official assessment and have the State Emergency Board review the situation."
