The Navy's leadership expects within six months to know whether and what kind of role smaller and non-traditional shipyards could play in the development of a new class of littoral combat ships (LCS), according to Vice Adm. Michael Mullen, deputy chief of naval operations for resources, requirements and assessments.
"It is too early to say...but I think that question [over whether nontraditional shipbuilders have a shot at LCS] will be answered within the next six months. There will be early RFPs (requests for proposals) and studies, and those answers will start to come in," Mullen on Tuesday told Defense Daily during an interview.
