Net Income Showed Gains At These Life Insurers In 1989

For most of the insurers in this week's survey, the 1989 numbers were quite an improvement over the year before.

Travelers 1989 net income zoomed to $455 million from $55 million the previous year. Premium of $7.79 billion generated in 1989 was roughly equal to 1988's $7.77 billion.

In its annual report, Travelers said that the increase in 1989 net income "reflected significantly fewer impairments of investments, and improvement in all life insurance lines and certain noninsurance subsidiaries' results."
