The State Historical Society of Wisconsin -- aka Wisconsin Historical Society -- made news much of this spring and little of it was good. Budget problems resulted in cuts in funding, staff and support for the essential work of collecting and archiving books, publications and historical documents that are at the heart of the society's mission.
Also among the society's troubles were the steadily falling numbers at the eight historic sites -- excluding the Circus World Museum -- run by the society. Attendance at the sites has declined since the mid-1990s and reached a 10-year low of 130,802 in 2001.
