ABIX via COMTEX) -- On 29 May 2002, East Timor was declared an independent nation. The authority for self-administration was handed to representatives of the East Timorese government by the UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan. The East Timor President, Xanana Gusmao, used the occasion to extend a conciliatory note to Indonesia, the nation that occupied the country for almost 24 years. The celebrations at the birth of the new nation could not cover some basic issues, however, such as the economic relationship between Australia and East Timor.
