ABIX via COMTEX) -- On 29 May 2002, East Timor was declared an independent nation. The authority for self-administration was handed to representatives of the East Timorese government by the UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan. The East Timor President, Xanana Gusmao, used the occasion to extend a conciliatory note to Indonesia, the nation that occupied the country for almost 24 years.
