Former Argentine dictator Gen. Leopoldo Fortunato Galtieri (1981-1982) was arrested on July 11 for human rights abuses allegedly committed two decades ago. Judge Claudio Bonadio ordered the 76-year-old Galtieri and 44 former military intelligence agents detained in connection with the kidnapping, torture, and murder of 18 suspected leftist guerrillas in 1980.
The detained military and security officers include former Buenos Aires regional commander Gen. Carlos Guillermo Suarez Mason, former army chief Gen. Cristino Nicolaides, and former federal police chief Raimundo Ojeda. The units they headed were accused of widespread atrocities during the 1976- 1983 ...
