America should extend a hand to its old enemy
FIFTEEN years after the American helicopters clattered in humiliation off the embassy roof in Saigon, Vietnam's foreign minister and America's will at last be shaking hands and having a chat. Mr Nguyen Co Thach and Mr James Baker have a lot to discuss at their New York meeting, due to take place on September 28th in the penumbra of this year's session of the UN General Assembly.
Top of the agenda is Cambodia, whose shaky steps towards peace and a free election need to be steadied and encouraged. Not far below is the emotional issue of American soldiers still formally described as missing in action in Vietnam. ...
