A hospital's medical records department traditionally has invoked images of color-coded manila folders and unmanageable stacks of paper. With the inception of diagnosis related groups (DRGs) and the ever-increasing number of agencies seeking documentation from hospitals, the mass of paperwork has increased substantially, making it difficult for medical records to manually keep up with demands on its limited resources.
